Our Project

Codman Academy: Urban Agriculture/Aquaponics Study
Project Client: Codman Academy

Faculty:
Marilyn Moedinger [Marilyn.moedinger@the-bac.edu]
Dan Weissman [daweissman@gmail.com]

This project is a two semester project; in the first semester, students will study urban agriculture and aquaponics, install a pilot aquaponics installation in the library at Codman, and propose agriculture/ aquaponics interventions on sites around Codman’s campus [based on recommendations from the Codman Master Plan Gateway team]. This Gateway will also leverage and collaborate on research and work done in the academic workshop, “50 Shades of Green.”

The second semester will focus on design of a specific intervention on the Codman campus, with the goal of building that intervention in the spring of 2014.

Deliverables
In every Gateway Project, clients sign a contract with the Practice Department, which outlines what they expect to receive at the end of the semester. Each project must provide these deliverables, just as if you were working in a firm providing services to clients. This is a real contract, with real expectations, real deliverables, and a real client.

At the end of the first semester on this project, students will have produced the following:
  • Graphic evidence of analysis, design and community process, and conclusions drawn in the form of a written/illustrated report, with pages contributed to the Codman Master Plan team report
  • Final graphic presentation to client on findings, analysis, and proposals
  • Preliminary budget
  • At the end of the second semester on this project, students will have produced the following:
  • Complete design proposal
  • Set of working drawings, work plan, and working budget for preparation to build in the spring of 2014

PROJECT SCHEDULE

INITIAL MEETING

[Saturday, 2 Feb, 1-3pm]
In class: Introduction, establish group norms; discuss project and hand out first assignment
Deliverables: be there!

PHASE ONE: During Phase One, you will be researching three aquaponics precedent projects, learning about aquaponics and urban agriculture by hearing several guest lectures, and building an aquaponics systems in the library at Codman Academy. Our goal is to become “experts” in aquaponics, as well as gaining familiarity with Codman Academy’s site and program needs, all in preparation to charrette with the Master Planning team at the conclusion of Phase One.

WEEK ONE
  [Tuesday 5 Feb, 7-10 pm]
In meeting: Guest Lecture: Kyle Sturgeon, aquaponics overview
  Presentation: Precedent research so far
  Discussion: How to research
Deliverables: Precedent research

WEEK TWO
  [Tuesday12 Feb, 4-7 pm]
Site visit with Codman Master Planning team
[Tuesday 12 Feb, 7-10 pm]
In meeting: Lecture + Tutorial: Light/Solar Gain
  Presentation/Discussion: Precedent research so far

  [Friday 1 March, 9am-12pm]
ADD PLANTS TO CODMAN SYSTEM!

PHASE TWO: During Phase Two, you will be taking what you now know about aquaponics and begin to understand how it applies to sites at Codman Academy. Working in a group charrette with the Master Planning team, you will help identify key sites to study for suitability for urban ag/aquaponics installations in Codman’s precinct.

WEEK FIVE
[Tuesday 4 March, time TBD]
GROUP CHARRETTE WITH MASTER PLANNING TEAM @ UTILE
Deliverables: Precedent research presentation

WEEK SIX
[Tuesday 12 March, 7-10 pm]

Deliverables: Preliminary Codman sites analysis

WEEK SEVEN
[Tuesday 19 March]
SPRING BREAK – NO CLASS

WEEK EIGHT
[Tuesday 26 March, 7-10 pm]
In class: Discussion/work session: Codman sites analysis
Deliverables: Codman sites analysis

WEEK NINE
[Tuesday 2 April, 7-10 pm]
CLIENT PRESENTATION
Deliverables: completed analysis for all Codman sites, presentation for client

PHASE THREE: During Phase Three, you will integrate the client feedback you got from the presentation and from the Master Planning team into creating a more detailed design diagram/proposal for one [or more, depending] site[s] at Codman. This will include determining what kind of system is appropriate for the site and the client, as well as understandings of material/equipment specification, budgeting, and construction schedule. The semester’s work will be collated into a single book, as well as into a shorter “chapter” that will be included in the Master Planning team’s book. The final client presentation will occur not quite at the end of the semester, to allow you to integrate another round of client comments into the final book.
